By now, you’ve probably noticed that we’re big on story-telling around here – and with good reason! People love stories.
They are everywhere (and I don’t just mean on Instagram). It’s easy to pick up on them in the common places, like in books, on your favorite shows, or in the news – but stories are also part of the marketing strategies and messaging of some of your favorite brands, and maybe you’ve even recognized the brand stories of small businesses your friends and family are working to build.
Spend any length of time geeking out with me about marketing, branding and design and you will know that I am an avid follower of Seth Godin, if you have never heard of him, look him up. He shares so many nuggets of wisdom and they always seem to be applicable to whatever I am working on.
In terms of sharing your brand story, one of my absolute favorite things Seth always comes back to is building a tribe, or audience, or following based on this phrase:
“people like us do things like this”
That’s it. It’s the basis for your story. Who are the people like you? Or the people like your brand? And what are “things like this”?
“People like you” or people like your brand are exactly the people you are building your brand for. All the choices you make, visually, in your content, in your approach, all of it should resonate with those people, and that’s where “things like this” comes into play.
From a visual stand point “things like this” is aesthetic of your design choices. The colors you use, the fonts and imagery you display along with it. How you visually present your brand in a way that resonates with… ya know, people like us.
On social media, it’s about how you build and cultivate a community where the “people like us” feel included and specifically called out to be a part of what you are creating. What you’re sharing and how you share it should attract the kinds of people with similar same thoughts and beliefs as your ideal customer.
As far as content marketing is concerned, what is your position? Are you a resource, or a guiding light in your field? Are you doing something new and different? How are you sharing that?
All these questions are a part of how your brand story becomes a living, breathing thing that your audience connects to; and people love to feel connected to something. They want to be connected to other people with similar thoughts and ideas, goals and needs, which is why social media and on-line communities are so popular today.
So, what’s our story? Who are the people like us?
Ke design studio is a creative firm that serves small businesses by providing comprehensive marketing and design functions to help enhance their brand strategies. So, like other “micro-agencies” we’re positioned to offer a more agile and adaptable solution to the ever-changing needs of our clients.
But that’s the easy part, defining your industry – knowing your services. Now the hard question, what are “things like this?”
For us, it’s our hands-on approach to building brands and brand stories. We work alongside our clients to help them dig into their story and their purpose; and together, we develop strategies for them to share it with their target audience in a way that is resourceful, informative, approachable, and unique to their brand experience.
Finally, focus on the ultimate question – Why?
If you are familiar with Ted Talks, you’ve likely heard this one by Simon Sinek with his famed quote “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.”
If you can define your why, then your story literally comes to life. Here are a few “whys” worth considering:
Every business has a why, and it’s the why that is worth sharing. People will connect to the “why” and if it resonates, then they’ve found a reason to trust you.
So, what’s our why?
We love people! It’s not just about our relationships with our clients, but how we can help brands build lasting relationships with their ideal customers. Relationships are all about trust, communication, and loyalty – and at the end of the day, isn’t that all any of us want from the brands that we engage with?
Does your business have a story worth sharing? We think so! If you’re on the hunt for creative ways to share your story we’d love to learn more about you and help you develop tools to share your story. Let’s get started.
